COMPREHENSION
(The Greeks are famous for their legends. The story of Daedalus and his son was first written down by Greek story-tellers more than two thousand years ago and tells the story of what happened to the first men who tried to fly).
They flew through the night, and Icarus did not climb to the stars or stray from his father’s course. But in the morning he rose on soaring wings. He longed for the open sky; he was drawn towards the sun.
When Daedalus glanced behind him, the boy was not there. He looked below and saw the cloud tops and the blue sea. He looked up and saw far above him a black speck in front of the burning sun..
Too near Icarus had flown, too near. In the scorching rays the wax began to melt and drip, the feathers slid away. He shouted for his father. Frantically he beat the air with his bare arms, but without wings they would not hold him. He dropped out of the sky, straight as a stone. He was still shouting for his father when the sea closed over his lips.
“Where are you, Icarus?” cried Daedalus. “Where are you?”
He swooped down towards the sea, towards a sprinkling of white foam on the waves. As he came nearer he saw that it was not foam but feathers, drifting on the tide towards the lonely shore. For a while he circled above calling ‘Icarus!’ and flapping his wide melancholy wings. Then he followed the drifting feathers and landed on the shore and took off his wings. There were feathers everywhere. He did not touch them, and bitterly cursed his skill.
Soon the body was washed up at his feet, on to the island which was afterwards to be named Icaria after the boy. Gently he picked it up, while the gulls dipped and climbed above him. Then he followed a track between the cliffs and buried the body under an oak tree.
